Physicians still facing high burnout, job stress, low satisfaction rates

The overall physician burnout rate reached 53 percent in 2022, according to the American Medical Association's Organizational Biopsy report, published June 23. While burnout has fallen from its peak in 2021, other key performance indicators in the report highlight physicians' dissatisfaction with medicine.

Between 2021 and 2022, physician job satisfaction dropped to 68 percent, below the satisfaction rate of nurse practitioners and physician assistants.

Physicians also reported high levels of job stress, with 56 percent feeling stressed by factors including workload and administrative tasks.

Many physicians also indicated they plan to leave their roles in the next two years. About 40 percent of physicians said they are moderately likely, likely or definitely going to leave their positions.

Additionally, only 46 percent of physicians felt valued by their organization to a great or moderate extent. About 18 percent reported not feeling valued at all.
