Michigan pulmonary and sleep physician Venkat Rao, MD, died June 3 from his injuries after he was hit by a vehicle in Grand Blanc on June 1, ABC affiliate WJRT reported June 6.
"It appeared [Dr. Rao] was struck by a vehicle but no vehicle was around," police Lt. Bryan Byarski said in a news release, The Flushing View reported June 8. "While on scene, a subject showed up and stated they believed they were the one that struck [Dr. Rao]. The subject was detained and questioned about the incident."
Dr. Rao ran a practice with other physicians at Chest & Sleep Medicine Consultants in Flint, Mich., and was the chair of internal medicine at McLaren Flint. He was also on faculty at East Lansing-based Michigan State University and served as chair of the board of medicine for the state of Michigan.
"With a heavy heart and sorrow we regret to inform [you] that one of our founding fathers of Chest and Sleep Medicine Consultants passed away," a statement on his practice's website said. "[He is] loved and will be missed."
