Hospitalist compensation in 2024: 11 things to know

Hospitalists earned an average of $321,000 in 2023, up just $5,000 from the year prior, according to Medscape's 2024 "Hospitalist Compensation Report," published July 26. 

On average, hospitalists see an average of 71 patients per week, according to the report. 

Here are 10 additional things to know about hospitalist compensation in 2024: 

1. The average hospitalist earns a yearly bonus of $30,000. 

2. Just over half of hospitalists (51%) feel fairly compensated when considering their work demands. 

3. Over half of hospitalists (58%) believe that most U.S. physicians are underpaid. 

4. Female hospitalists earn an average of $58,000 less than their male counterparts, at $289,000 annually, compared to $347,000. 

5. Half of hospitalists take extra work to boost their income. 

6. On average, hospitalists work four more hours per week than their nonhospitalist counterparts. 

7. By and large, hospitalists agree that the two worst parts of the job include dealing with difficult patients (22%) and the number of rules and regulations (22%). 

8. The majority of hospitalists (73%) would choose a medical career again. 

9. The majority of hospitalists were not drawn to medicine because of the compensation. Compensation was not a factor for 41% of practitioners, while it was just a minor factor for an additional 39%. 

10. The majority of hospitalists (51%) are just as motivated to work as when they first started their careers.
