68% of employed physicians think they'll leave their organizations in the next 10 years

More than half of employed physicians don't plan to stay with their organizations over the next decade, according to Medscape's 2022 "Employed Physicians Report: Loving the Focus, Hating the Bureaucracy."

About the same number of self-employed physicians (69 percent) also plan to leave their jobs within 10 years, Medscape said. An aging population of physicians drives part of the numbers, but the report also pointed to persistent burnout.

For employed physicians, 38 percent said they would leave their organizations in one to five years, and 22 percent said they leave in six to 10 years. Eight percent say they think they'll exit within one year, and 13 percent say they will remain in their job for at least 20 more years.

Medscape surveyed 1,359 physicians between March 17 to May 31 for the report.
