6 Walgreens moves in 6 weeks

Here are six Walgreens moves that Becker's has reported on since May 17:

  1. Walgreens partnered with medtech company Freenome to advance clinical trials of Freenome's blood tests for early cancer detection.
  2. Walgreens jettisoned its remaining stake in infusion company Option Care Health for $330 million as it concentrates on its pharmacy and primary care businesses.
  3. VillageMD, which is majority-owned by Walgreens, was selected for a two-year study funded by the National Institutes of Health to identify patients with undiagnosed Alzheimer's disease using EHR data.
  4. Village Medical has 8 percent of retail clinic market share by number of locations, according to Definitive Healthcare.
  5. Walgreens Boots Alliance laid off about 10 percent of its corporate workforce, or 504 employees. Most of the layoffs were at the company's headquarters in Deerfield, Ill., and its Chicago office.
  6. Walgreens doubled down on clinical trials after competitor CVS Health said it would be exiting that market by the end of 2024.
