49 hospitals closing service lines

Below are 49 hospitals ending services that Becker's has reported on since Feb. 6:

  1. Vancouver, Wash.-based PeaceHealth is permanently closing five clinics and services.

  2. Milwaukee-based Froedtert closed a behavioral health unit at one of its hospitals in May and plans to close the obstetrics unit at another in June.

  3. Welch (W.Va.) Community Hospital is looking to close its long-term care unit, according to the West Virginia health department.

  4. KPC Promise Hospital in Vicksburg, Miss., may be forced to close next month after missing lease payments to its landlord, Flowood, Miss.-based Merit Health.

  5. Spring Valley, Ill.-based St. Margaret's Health will close several clinics by June 9, and the hospital could close on June 16 if it does not receive emergency funding from the state.

  6. Peoria, Ill.-based OSF HealthCare is reopening its Danville birthing center in September and closing its labor and delivery services at OSF Heart of Mary Medical Center in Urbana, Ill.

  7. Northern Maine Medical Center in Fort Kent will close its obstetrics unit May 26.

  8. Froedtert Menomonee Falls (Wis.) Hospital is closing its behavioral health unit May 12.

  9. St. Louis-based Ascension plans to close the urgent care center, imaging center and pharmacy at its now-defunct Providence hospital campus in Washington, D.C.

  10. Crozer Health-owned Delaware County Memorial Hospital in Drexel Hill, Pa., will be closing its emergency department and ending general inpatient services after a Pennsylvania appeals court reversed a lower court's ruling. 

  11. CoxHealth plans to close the labor and delivery unit at Cox (Mo.) Monett Hospital by July 1, citing difficulties recruiting obstetricians and family practice physicians.

  12. Texas Vista Medical Center in San Antonio, part of Dallas-based Steward Health Care, will close May 1 after more than 40 years, leaving many concerned about access to care in the area.

  13. Warsaw, N.Y.-based Wyoming County Community Health System is ending its birthing services June 1 amid financial challenges and declining births in the area.

  14. Alta Vista Regional Hospital in Las Vegas, N.M., will end intensive care unit services, effective June 3. 

  15. Maumee, Ohio-based McLaren St. Luke's is closing its facility earlier than expected because of the extra time the hospital will need to migrate its EHR system and other IT data.

  16. Salisbury, Md.-based TidalHealth Peninsula Regional Hospital could close its trauma center if state funding formula changes are not made.

  17. Springfield, Ore.-based McKenzie-Willamette Medical Center is to close a midwifery practice less than four years after launching the in-house program.

  18. Gardner, Mass.-based Heywood Hospital will close its pulmonary unit in mid-April due to financial reasons.

  19. CHI Mercy Health in Roseburg, Ore., is cutting several jobs and closing its home health service line.

  20. Renton, Wash.-based Providence said it would end labor and delivery at Petaluma (Calif.) Valley Hospital May 1, until further notice.

  21. Chelsea (Mich.) Hospital is closing its adult inpatient behavioral health unit at the end of 2023.

  22. Emmett, Idaho-based Valor Health will close maternal inpatient labor and delivery services June 1 and instead focus on pre- and postnatal care for women.

  23. Danbury, Conn.-based Nuvance Health will close a 100-bed rehabilitation facility in Rhinebeck, N.Y., and lay off its 102 employees.

  24. McLaren St. Luke's Hospital in Maumee, Ohio, planned to lay off 743 workers when it permanently closed this spring, according to a notice filed with state regulators.

  25. Plymouth, Ind.-based St. Joseph Health System is the latest system to announce closures of women's health services.

  26. Springfield, Mass.-based Baystate Health and medical services provider Shields Health are closing their urgent care clinic locations in Feeding Hills, Longmeadow and Westfield, Mass.

  27. Eastern Niagara Hospital in Lockport, N.Y., is set to close June 17 after years of financial turbulence. An ambulatory center operated by the hospital will close the same day but will reopen immediately under Buffalo, N.Y.-based Catholic Health's management.

  28. Cabell Huntington (W.Va.) Hospital closed its CHH Surgery Center, effective April 28, and is phasing out its home health services.

  29. Marble Falls, Texas-based Hill Country Memorial Hospital, which was recently acquired by San Antonio Methodist Hospital, closed its surgery center March 31.

  30. The only hospital in Manitowoc, Wis., a city of nearly 35,000 — Froedtert Holy Family Memorial Hospital — will stop all obstetrics care beginning June 1.

  31. Astria Toppenish (Wash.) Hospital is one of many rural hospitals closing labor and delivery care due to costs, creating maternity deserts in areas that need care most, The New York Times reported.

  32. Portland, Ore.-based Legacy Health said it is on track to close the family birth center at its Mount Hood Medical Center on schedule, even as the Oregon Health Authority said it cannot give a timeline for approval, according to multiple reports.

  33. HSHS St. Mary's Hospital in Decatur, Ill., temporarily closed its labor and delivery floor March 9.

  34. Phoenix-based Banner Health closed its ambulatory surgery center in Loveland, Colo., on March 31. 

  35. Rochester, N.H.-based Frisbie Memorial Hospital was approved to discontinue labor and delivery services after a $2.75 million settlement agreement.

  36. Citing a lack of provider coverage, Ocean Springs, Miss.-based Singing River Health System said it will end obstetric services, which include labor and delivery, at Singing River Gulfport (Miss.), at least temporarily.

  37. Cleveland-based University Hospitals ended labor and delivery services at UH Lake West in Willoughby, Ohio, effective April 15.

  38. Jefferson, Mo.-based Capital Region Medical Center closed two clinics in Holts Summit and St. Elizabeth, Mo., effective April 15.

  39. Trinity Health Muskegon (Mich.) plans to temporarily close a 30-bed surgical floor due to staffing shortages.

  40. St. Mark's Medical Center in La Grange, Texas, is cutting nearly half its staff and various services as it looks to survive amid significant financial challenges. Service cuts include inpatient and surgical services, post-acute skilled rehab care, its orthopedic clinic, speech therapy and ambulatory care.

  41. OhioHealth's Shelby Hospital ended maternity services starting in February. Maternity services are provided 13 miles away at OhioHealth Mansfield Hospital.

  42. Arcata, Calif.-based Mad River Community Hospital is cutting 27 jobs as it suspends its home health services program.

  43. Oroville (Calif.) Hospital is closing Golden Valley Home Health, the hospital's home health business.

  44. Children's Hospital of the King's Daughters in Norfolk, Va., abruptly closed the retail pharmacy it leased to Hague Pharmacy Feb. 8 following the end of its lease. The hospital's in-house pharmacy is still open.

  45. Ascension Providence Hospital-Southfield (Mich.) ended midwifery services in February.

  46. Rumford (Maine) Hospital closed its maternity program March 31 after 97 years in service.

  47. Oroville (Calif.) Hospital announced it would close Golden Valley Home Health, the hospital's home health business.

  48. Children's Hospital of The King's Daughters in Norfolk, Va., abruptly closed the retail pharmacy it leased to Hague Pharmacy Feb. 8 after its lease expired.

  49. Fredericksburg, Texas-based Hill County Memorial Hospital closed its Marble Falls, Texas-based Hill Country Memorial Surgery Center.
