2 physicians among those charged in $61.5 M Medicare fraud scheme

Two physicians are among the 23 Michigan residents involved in two schemes to defraud more than $61.5 million by billing CMS for unnecessary services and paying kickbacks.

Jalal and Walid Jamil owned and operated multiple home health agencies in the Detroit area but allegedly concealed their ownership interest while submitting millions of dollars in claims to Medicare, according to court documents released by the Justice Department Feb. 7.

They allegedly hid their ownership through the use of family members and other associates as straw owners in order to submit an estimated $50 million in fraudulent home health care claims to CMS. They allegedly paid patient recruiters and entered into quid pro quo relationships with physicians in order to obtain the information to bill Medicare.

Alejandro Mataverde, MD, Cornelius Oprisiu, MD, and Shafiq Rehman, a nurse practitioner, were also allegedly involved in the scheme, according to court documents. The three providers were employed by a home visiting physician company, Infinity Visiting Physician Services, and allegedly billed Medicare for unnecessary services provided to patients referred by the Jalils.
