The demand for chief medical officers across several industries has skyrocketed by more than 650 percent since the beginning of the pandemic, and a report by Statistica found that women occupy 51 percent of those roles.
Here are 11 women who recently moved into chief medical officer roles, as reported by Becker's in 2022:
- Alexandra Clark, MD, was named chief medical officer of Riverside University Medical Center in Moreno Valley, Calif.
- Danielle Mahaffey, MD, was named chief medical officer of Alamance Regional Medical Center in Burlington, N.C.
- Susan Kaufman, DO, will replace Dennis Morris, MD, as the vice president and chief medical officer for Lima (Ohio) Memorial Health System when he retires in April.
- Scholar Rock, a clinical-stage biopharma company focused on the treatment of diseases in which protein growth plays a large role, named Dr. Jing Marantz, PhD, as chief medical officer.
- Nimbus Therapeutics, a clinical-stage company specializing in developing breakthrough medicine, selected Dr. Nathalie Franchimont, PhD, for the role of chief medical officer.
- Sandhya Gardner, MD, was promoted from chief medical officer of Burlington, Mass.-based digital healthcare provider HealthEdge's software to chief medical officer of the company's clinical solutions.
- Clearwater, Fla.-based BayCare Health System appointed Sowmya Viswanathan, MD, as vice president and chief medical officer of its group of St. Joseph hospitals in Tampa, Fla.
- Cynthia Matossian, MD, was appointed chief medical officer of Visiox Pharma, an ophthalmic drug company.
- Luna Mehrain, MD, was named chief medical officer of maternal and infant health company Maternova.
- Julie Maltzman, MD, was appointed chief medical officer of preclinical-stage cancer research biotechnology company IconOVir Bio.
- Kimberly Becher, MD, was promoted to chief medical officer at Rock Cave-based Community Care of West Virginia, where she has been working as a family physician since 2014.
