10 physicians who earned accolades in the last 15 days

From being knighted to being hand-picked by President Joe Biden for an advisory board, here are 10 physicians who made headlines for their achievements, as reported by Becker's, since Feb. 2:

1. Dr. Rahul Gupta was presented with the American Medical Association's award for outstanding government service for his work to emphasize harm reduction and evidence-based treatments for substance use disorders.

2. Debra Houry, MD, chief medical officer at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, was awarded the American Medical Association's award for outstanding government service for her more than 20 years of work at the CDC.

3. David Huang, MD, PhD, was elected to the National Academy of Engineering for co-inventing optical coherence tomography.

4. Willie Edward Lawrence Jr., MD, medical director of Health Equity of Corewell Health South in Benton Harbor, Mich., was awarded the Press Ganey HX2 physician of the year award for the high-quality cardiovascular care he provides to patients in his community.

5. Annie George, PhD, RN, corporate senior director of nursing excellence and research of NYC Health + Hospitals in New York City, was awarded the Press Ganey HX2 nurse leader of the year award for her commitment to staff education.

6. David Lubarsky, MD, CEO of University of California Davis Health in Sacramento, was awarded the Press Ganey HX2 CEO of the year award for his focus on expanding UC Davis Health and improving the hospital's revenue. 

7. Robert Phillips, PhD, executive vice president and chief physician executive and specialty physician group CEO of Houston Methodist, was awarded the Press Ganey HX2 lifetime achievement award for influential leadership throughout the course of his career. Dr. Phillips has worked in healthcare for decades, and is well-known for his detailed response and management of COVID-19. 

8. President Joe Biden appointed two physicians, Richard Boxer, MD, and Dr. Ana Navas-Acien, PhD, to the National Cancer Advisory Board, which complements President Biden's Cancer Moonshot program aiming to end cancer worldwide. 

9. Abdulla Al-Khan, MD, was honored with the First Degree of the National Golden Medal as an achiever by His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa of the Kingdom of Bahrain in a ceremony at Al Sakheer Guest Palace.
