Susan Smyth, MD, cardiologist and dean of the College of Medicine at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences in Little Rock, died of cancer on Dec. 31 at age 57, according to a Jan. 2 report from the Arkansas Democrat Gazette.
Dr. Smyth continued to work as the college's dean up until her death.
Dr. Smyth specialized in arterial and venous thrombosis and published over 200 articles in her field. She had been with UAMS for 19 months, joining from the University of Kentucky College of Medicine in Lexington.
She also held positions at the Kentucky Center for Clinical and Translation Science, the University of North Carolina and the Lexington Veterans Affairs Health Care System.
"She will be remembered not just today, not just a year from now. She will be remembered 50 years from now," Cam Patterson, MD, UAMS chancellor, told the Gazette.
