Here are 10 C-suite executives to know:
Andrew Witty, CEO
Mr. Witty stepped into his role as CEO in February 2021, and also serves on the payer's board of directors. He has also served as a UnitedHealth Group executive vice president and as the CEO of Optum. Prior to joining UnitedHealth Group, Mr. Witty led pharmaceutical manufacturer GlaxoSmithKline as its CEO for nine years.
John Rex, CFO and executive vice president
Mr. Rex was named CFO and executive vice president in 2016. He was formerly CFO and executive vice president of Optum, which he joined in 2012. Mr. Rex's background prior to UnitedHealth Group included being an equity research analyst, consultant and accountant across healthcare.
Dirk McMahon, COO and president
Mr. McMahon was named COO and president of UnitedHealth Group in February 2021 after serving as UnitedHealthcare's CEO since 2019. Mr. McMahon's background took him across UnitedHealth Group's portfolio since joining in 2003, having served Optum as president and COO, UnitedHealth Group as executive vice president of enterprise operations, and OptumRx as CEO.
Terry Clark, chief marketing officer and senior vice president
Mr. Clark has served as chief marketing officer and senior vice president since being appointed in 2014. He entered the position after serving as the chief marketing officer for UnitedHealthcare Medicare & Retirement. Before entering the healthcare industry, Mr. Clark was executive vice president of sales and marketing for consumer technology company InterActiveCorp.
Patricia Lewis, chief human resources officer and executive vice president
Ms. Lewis joined UnitedHealth Group as its chief human resources officer and executive vice president in 2019. She joined from aerospace company Lockheed Martin, where she also helmed human resources. Prior to that, she held leadership positions at IBM and DuPont.
Richard Mattera, chief development officer and senior vice president
Mr. Mattera stepped into his current position in 2020 after serving as Optum's chief legal officer. He has a decade of experience leading mergers and acquisitions across UnitedHealth Group's portfolio of companies. Prior to UnitedHealth Group, he was a partner at law firm Hogan Lovells.
Tom Roos, chief accounting officer and senior vice president
Mr. Roos spent nearly seven years as chief accounting officer and senior vice president since joining UnitedHealth Group in 2015. Previously, he served as a partner at law firm Deloitte & Touche for eight years, where he worked on accounting and reporting for the tech and healthcare industries.
Dan Schumacher, chief strategy and growth officer
Mr. Schumacher entered his role in April 2021, but has served across the UnitedHealth Group portfolio since he joined UnitedHealthcare in 2006. He had a three-year tenure as UnitedHealthcare's CFO and served as president and COO of Optum for nearly two years.
Jennifer Smoter, chief communications officer and senior vice president
Ms. Smoter joined UnitedHealth Group in March 2021. She previously served biotech startup Intellia Therapeutics as its senior vice president of external affairs and communications. She also held leadership roles at AbbVie and Abbott Laboratories.
Margaret-Mary Wilson, CMO and executive vice president
The newest addition to UnitedHealth Group's C-suite, Margaret-Mary Wilson, MD, joined the payer in December 2021. However, she has served around the payer's portfolio since 2008, including leadership positions with UnitedHealthcare's clinical services and global arms.
