How a sabbatical program helps one practice retain employees

Grand Rapids, Mich.-based Emergency Care Specialists offers its employees the opportunity to take a sabbatical, giving them month-long blocks of paid time off, according to a Nov. 9 study published in the New England Journal of Medicine.

According to the report, the sabbatical program has led to high career satisfaction, low rates of attrition and lower burnout rates at the facility.

As healthcare organizations look for ways to mitigate burnout and improve the mental health of their medical providers, Emergency Care's sabbatical program has shown promising results, according to the study.
