Stephen Smith, MD, was named chief medical officer for the University of Maryland Charles Regional Medical Center in La Planta. Dr. Smith assumes the role with three decades of medical and leadership experience.
Dr. Smith was the chair and medical director of the emergency department of UM Charles Regional from 2007 to 2009, according to a Dec. 13 release from the hospital. He was most recently the president and chief operating officer of the University of Virginia Health Prince William Medical Center in Manassas and Haymarket (Va.) Medical Center, according to his LinkedIn profile.
In this role, Dr. Smith will be responsible for overseeing the over 400 medical providers who serve the 104-bed hospital. He will also guide and direct UM Charles Regional's clinical programs, physician recruitment efforts, patient safety practices and the medical staff office.
Dr. Smith is a national board medical examiner, certified by the American Board of Emergency Medicine and is licensed to practice in Maryland, Virginia, the District of Columbia and California.
