Bernard King Jr., MD, has been awarded the 2023 gold medal from the American Roentgen Ray Society. Dr. King was the 117th president of the ARRS from 2017 to 2018.
Dr. King is a professor emeritus in the radiology department at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn., which he first joined as a genitourinary radiologist in 1988, according to a Dec. 13 news release from the society. Dr. King was instrumental in the introduction and adoption of digital radiologic imaging and Picture Archiving and Communications system at the Mayo Clinic in the 1990s.
Dr. King went on to serve as chair of the Mayo Clinic's department of radiology from 2006 to 2013 and the president of the Mayo Clinic Staff from 2013 to 2014. He joined the ARRS executive council in 2007 before becoming president.
Dr. King was also on the board of the Society of Abdominal Radiology, which he served as president from 2018 to 2019.
The ARRS is North America's first radiological society and has been bestowing the gold medal on physicians dedicated to the practice and science of medical imaging since 1983. The award is given based on the society's bylaws along with votes from the ARRS executive council.
