Michigan physician accused of telehealth Medicare fraud

Michigan physician Sangita Patel, MD, has been named in a criminal complaint filed in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Michigan concerning Medicare fraud, according to a Feb. 8 report from the Oakland Press.

Dr. Patel, who practices out of the Advance Medical Home Physicians Center in Troy, allegedly filed false and fraudulent claims for telehealth visits. The complaint accuses her of performing these visits not in accordance with Medicare regulations requiring telehealth visits to include both audio and video components.

The complaint also alleges that Dr. Patel distributed Schedule II controlled substances to patients that weren't medically necessary. She is also accused of using an unlicensed medical assistant to manage prescriptions through an electronic medical records system and distributing medications without interacting with the patients, the report said.
