Deadline to implement HIPAA-compliant video technology for telehealth nears

Physicians will be required to use HIPAA-compliant video technology for telehealth services by Aug. 10.

This requirement stems from the end of previous flexibilities set by the Human Services Office for Civil Rights following the expiration of the COVID-19 public health emergency May 11, according to a July 23 news release from the California Medical Association.

OCR offered a 90-day transition period after the changes were made, which ends Aug. 9. Physicians can find a list of HIPAA-compliant video communication products on the HHS website.
