10 takeaways on the state of telemedicine

Here are 10 takeaways for physicians to know from the Doximity 2023 "State of Telemedicine Report":

  1. New York City, Chicago and Boston are the top three metro areas with the highest adoption of telemedicine.
  2. Endocrinology, urology and gastroenterology are the top three specialties by telemedicine adoption rate.
  3. Telemedicine physician usage is the largest among those aged 30 to 39.
  4. Forty percent of physicians reported using telemedicine daily in their practice.
  5. Video call is the most commonly used method of telemedicine, with 94 percent of physicians reporting it as a method they use.
  6. Thirty-seven percent of physicians who utilize telemedicine said it increased their patients' adherence to treatment plans.
  7. Eighty-eight percent of physicians agree that telemedicine has increased patient access to health care.
  8. Ninety-two percent of physicians said ease of use is an important factor to ensuring patient access to telemedicine.
  9. Seventy-eight percent of physicians agree there should be pay parity between telemedicine and in-person visits.
  10. Eighty-four percent of physicians agree the ability to practice telemedicine across state lines can improve patient access to specialists and other timely care.
