Physicians in California and Texas must have a direct government loan or consolidate their loans into a direct loan by May 1 to be eligible for the Public Service Loan Forgiveness Program, according to a March 6 news release from the California Medical Association.
This requirement follows the release of the final rule on the national overhaul of the PSLF program by the Education Department.
Physicians in California and Texas recently became eligible for student loan forgiveness through the PSLF program despite state laws prohibiting nonprofit hospitals from employing physicians.
Applications for the new PSLF program open July 1.
