Michigan physician sentenced to prison for tax evasion

Bashar Kiama, MD, was sentenced to eight months in prison for evading income taxes related to the medical practice he owned, the U.S. Justice department said Feb. 22.

Dr. Kiama owned and operated Grayling, Mich.-based Northern Michigan Endocrine. From 2014 and 2017, Dr. Kiami underreported the practice's gross receipts and overstated its expenses.

He also must pay a $15,000 fine and the remaining $59,642 he owes in restitution for the taxes.
