Only 57.5 percent of physicians said they would choose to become a physician again, compared to 72.2 percent in 2020, according to a study published in Mayo Clinic Proceedings.
The American Medical Association, Mayo Clinic, Stanford University School of Medicine and the University of Colorado School of Medicine surveyed 2,440 physicians between Dec. 9, 2021, and Jan. 24, 2022 and compared the results to survey results from 2020, 2017, 2014 and 2011.
Here are four more stats:
1. In the most recent survey, 62.8 percent of physicians manifested at least one trait of burnout, compared to 38.2 percent in 2020.
2. Depression scores increased by 6.1 percent.
3. Favorable scores on professional fulfillment, defined as a sense of satisfaction or meaning that comes from work, dropped from 40 percent in 2020 to 22.4 percent.
4. Emotional exhaustion scores increased 38.6 percent.
