The Chicago Cubs have announced the retirement of its head team physician and medical director, Stephen Adams, MD.
Dr. Adams has served as head team physician since 2000, according to a Feb. 21 news release. He first joined the team in the 1980s and worked at the first aid station before becoming board certified in sports medicine, emergency medicine and internal medicine.
Dr. Adams was the first emergency physician to be the head team physician for a Major League Baseball team, eventually becoming president of the MLB Team Physician Association. He also served as chairman of the commissioner's Medical Advisory Council.
