The 36th annual 2023 Medical Group Compensation and Productivity Survey from AMGA reports a 6.1 percent increase in primary care compensation, compared to 1.5 and 1.6 percent increases for medical and surgical specialties, respectively.
AMGA Consulting director Elizabeth Siemsen attributes this increase in compensation to E/M coding changes put into effect by CMS in 2021, which are now being reflected in organizations' compensation plans.
This increase in primary care pay is coupled with a 2.9 percent increase in median wRVUs compared to the prior year. Primary care physician wRVUs account for the bulk of this number, with a 4 percent increase, according to the report.
