Both primary care and specialty care are projected to have staff shortages by 2031, according to a Sept. 29 report from McKinsey & Co.
The report pulled from 2021 data from market analytics company Lightcast and the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Data points analyzed in the study include the number of jobs in 2021, their predicted 2031 demand, and degrees or certifications completed in 2021 for various sectors within healthcare.
Here are six healthcare roles and their forecasted labor shortages in 2031 by the number of expected unfilled positions:
Nursing care: 831,212 open positions
Specialty care (including medical assistants): 62,604
Primary care (including medical assistants): 13,420
Pharmacy: 38,675
Dentistry: 36,517
Emergency medical services: 11,701
