How to build physician-administrator trust, per the AMA

The American Medical Association on Oct. 10 compiled a list of tips to build trust between physicians and hospital administrators with the goal of reducing burnout.

Here are five ways to build that trust, according to the organization:

  1. Develop communication channels that allow for listening sessions between physicians and a facilitator, such as town halls or informal social events.
  2. Provide opportunities for physicians and administrators to experience one another's roles, such as shadowing physicians or attending administrator meetings.
  3. Create a list of shared core values for both physicians and administrators to work toward.
  4. Offer opportunities for physicians to share their personal experiences with administrators.
  5. Develop a "trust challenge" that encourages physicians and administrators to share practices that would help them build trust.
