Emergency medicine physicians are taking less paid time off compared to other physician specialties, according to a Sept. 30 article on the American Medical Association website.
The AMA collected and analyzed its own data across two studies to show how emergency medicine physicians take time off.
Here are five things to know:
- Of emergency medicine physicians surveyed, 23.8% reported taking more than three weeks of vacation, the lowest amount of any physician specialty surveyed.
- Emergency medicine physicians were least likely to take more than 15 vacation days a year across all specialties.
- Of emergency medicine physicians surveyed, 30.8% reported taking five or fewer paid days off.
- Of emergency medicine physicians surveyed, 76.2% reported taking less than three weeks of paid time off.
- When they did take time off, 39.6% of emergency medicine physicians at academic medical centers reported spending more than 30 minutes working each day of vacation, compared to 14.1% of emergency medicine physicians in private practice.
