Campaign, grant program launches to help physicians focus on drivers of health

The Physicians Foundation has launched a campaign and grant program to help physicians address their patients' drivers of health, including transportation access and food security.

Eight in 10 physicians reported that they believe the U.S. cannot reduce healthcare costs or improve health outcomes without addressing these drivers of health, according to an April 20 news release. Meanwhile, 8 in 10 physicians also said addressing DOH contributes to burnout rates.

The Let's Take 5 to Address Drivers of Health campaign provides tools for providers to integrate evidence-based approaches to five key determinants of health: food security, housing stability, transportation access, utilities access and interpersonal safety. The campaign includes resource guides for implementing screenings and starting conversations about DOH with patients.

The Physicians Foundation has also designated five medical associations for a grant program to help physicians implement DOH screening in their practice.

Recipients of the grants include the Arizona Medical Association, Center for a Healthy Maryland, Foundation of the Pennsylvania Medical Society, Indiana Medical Foundation and Maine Medical Education Trust.
