This information comes from research from the University of Chicago published July 14.

1. The average physician earns $243,400 in wages and $350,000 in total individual income.

2. Age accounts for 14 percent of the variation in physician earnings.

3. Female physicians earn 30 percent less than men.

4. Business income makes up 25 percent of physician earnings.

5. Physicians' incomes tend to be highest in parts of the Great Plains, rather than on the coasts.
